Last week, we got a cool look at Arcane Earth with the trio of Supergirl, Zod and Zatanna. I liked the issue and hoped Dan Abnett would continue with such a fun team. This week, my hopes were dashed once again. I realize the fun of a book like this is seeing the diverse Earths and characters, but without really getting to know them, I find myself not caring about their plight or the story in general. As I hinted at, we get a new Earth and new characters this week, but this is a bit different. While there isn't much action and the bulk of the story takes place in one room, Abnett gives us one of the best issues of the series. It's rich in character and through that we even learn how this Earth works. I guess it helps that it features two of the greatest villains, the Joker and Lex Luthor.
Earth-19 may be run on gaslight, but Lex Luthor's star is shining bright. He owns Metropolis, but this night he's in Gotham. Arkham Asylum in particular. He's there to talk to the Joker. Why? Because the Joker is a raving lunatic and what Lex has to tell can only be believed by a raving lunatic. As Lex tells the story of his visit with Harbinger, Joker does a little card reading. It's such a cool back and forth between the story and cards. In he end, the Joker could care less about an Infinite Crisis, but Lex gains his resolve that he will do anything to save any Earth as long as he can rule it with an iron fist.
Like I said, this is one of the best issues of Infinite Crisis. If Abnett can give us more character issues like this, I'll be a happy man. Steam punk Lex is now my second favorite character after Arcane Green Lantern.
Freddie Williams II helps matters by kicking ass in the art department. It's dark, gloomy and great. Seriously, it is just as I'd imagine a gaslight world would look. Great job.
Bits and Pieces:
Infinite Crisis: Fight for the Multiverse #13 is the first issue I can truly recommend. It may lack action, but it's got character moments in spades. Of course, you can't go wrong when the characters are Lex Luthor and the Joker. Dan Abnett gives us great dialogue and Freddie Williams' art is appropriately gloomy. Recommended.
