The Golden Boy

Booster Gold is such a fun character.  Seriously, everywhere he pops up (and pop up he does) instantly becomes a crazier place.  Well, after a few New 52 appearances (Justice League International, All Star Western...) he is back and looking for trouble.  Actually, trouble seems to find him and this issue is no exception.  Dan Jurgens uses the Futures End Event to bring Booster back into the folds of space and time and while this issue is more setup than an event book has any right to be, I love what it sets up and where we find out it's going.

Booster is in trouble.  He is time and space hopping and everything is out of control. The fun part of stories like this is guessing where and when Booster will end up next.  He is a spectator to bits of his past (including a certain Blue guy...awesome!) and some new and strange places.  It's all tied together by a central story where Booster is being "asked" to give up a real important secret.

Dan Jurgens does a good job with the story.  Of course the creator of a character should easily "get" his creation, but it's the situations he puts Booster in.  It really gets crazy when Booster encounters other versions of himself which always causes issues with the theory and practice of time travel, but it's Booster so the reader can play it fast and loose and just enjoy the ride.  Just don't cross the streams.

In the end, we get a fun start of a story that looks to continue in the Futures End and Worlds End books.  While that sounds awesome and I can never get enough Booster, it feels odd to force this book into this Event.  Why not just cut to the chase and make this the start of his own book.  We're getting a Klarion book, why not a Booster one?

The art is done by an army of artists.  I don't get it.  It's not that they do a bad job.  Suprisingly, I really had no problems with the art at all, but ten artists is just silly.  It's no surprise that Moritat and Brett Booth are my favorites here since they are two of my all time favorites and i enjoy everything they do.

Bits and Pieces:

This is a bit of an odd Futures End title.  Dan Jurgens uses this issue to reintroduce Booster Gold and then prep him for the upcoming Worlds End book.  Those unfamiliar with Booster may be confused, but Jurgens and ten (ten!) artists make it a fun romp that has me pumped for the future of the character and the craziness he is bound to cause.  Welcome back, Booster.  I missed you.
