I See Dead Heroes

Infinity Man and the Forever People bucked the odds and has become one of the books I look forward to reading each month. However, it's Futures End Month so every thing's been put on hold to tell a story of...Five Years in the Future Future Future. Yes, that was a written echo.  Pretty neat, huh?  I have to confess, I was really wondering what Dan Didio and Keith Giffen would do with this issue. The book has just started so fans are only just getting their feet wet when it comes to the characters and their World.  Give credit to Didio and Giffen because they not only make you care for the characters involved, but also for those that don't even show up.

Five years haven't been good to the Forever People or Infinity Man.  In fact, they may have to rethink those names because things don't look so "forever" or "infinite".  The issue opens with Mark waking up on a slab, screaming for Dreamer.  Mark can't quite remember what has happened that lead him here and Dreamer doesn't help much.  They fight over trust, blame and consequences.  Yea, something really bad has happened to the team, but it's shrouded in mystery.

After a quick Parademon attack, things start getting clearer.  Dreamer tells Mark the sad details of what happened to the team.  It ties into the Earth War and it's downright depressing.  Then the twist hits.  This is a Sixth Sense twist, not a Lady in the Water twist.  I really enjoyed it and it lead me to read the issue over again.

Dan Didio and Keith Giffen have done it again.  They turned an issue that I was worried about and turned it into one I really enjoyed. Yes, it may be a bit wordy, but seeing the sad fate of one of my new favorite teams was so good even if it was truly depressing.  I'm not sure how new readers will react to this issue, but I'd recommend they start with the regular series to at least get an inkling of the characters involved.

Philip Tan does a really good job on art, even if he is restricted by the nature of the issue.  The regular run has had as many artists as issues and I wouldn't mind seeing more of Tan.

Bits and Pieces:

While a Futures End issue of Infinity Man and the Forever People seemed odd when it was announced, I 'm glad it happened.  Dan Didio and Keith Giffen show a dark end for the team and Philip Tan keeps the pace.  If you are a fan of the series, you should check this out.

8.5/10
