The Enemy of My Enemy Is Still My Enemy, But What The Hell

Last week in Red Lanterns we saw that Guy Gardner and Simon Baz are getting in on the New God bashing when Earth was invaded by a handful of these Kirby Colossus', to get their hands on Guy's ring....... and I guess Simon's, but they went specifically for Guy, but pretty much they want all the rings taken from slingers in the Prime Universe because of them being "lesser beings".  Elsewhere John Stewart and his band of Lanterns were rescued by the Indigo Tribe when they were attacked by a New God and Hal Jordan as far as I know is still licking his wounds and contemplating suicide after seeing the massive beating they took from the New Gods and good old Kyle was invited to New Genesis by Highfather to get that pesky Life Equation removed from him so he can get back to simply smooching with Carol Ferris.  It looks like Sinestro is up next, so let's see how this master of fear deals with the possibility of complete annihilation from this alien god menace in GODHEAD Act 1 Part 6.  Let's check it out.

Explain It!:

Our story begins with Sinestro, who appears to have a crush on the New God "Bekka", who came down to New Korugar in GODHEAD and whooped the Sinestro Corps' silly asses and made off with Arkillo's ring after severing his fingers.  It was one of those "Oh god this is so bad ass, but holy shit I love Arkillo, how dare you" moments.  You guys have those moments right?  The Sinestro Corps begins questioning Sinestro, for his infatuations instead of his lust for vengeance and we're told that while Lyssa Drak can't foresee what will happen in this conflict with the New Gods........ you know other than death.  It seems that Sinestro has it all taken care of in the form of Despotellis "The World Killer", who stowed away on Arkillo's ring and is now the perfect spy for Sinestro.

We find out that at that moment Bekka and her army have invaded Nok and the Indigo Tribe and John Stewart and his small band of GLs are trying their best to hold the forces back, but they won't be able to hold out for long.  Even though the rest of the Sinestro Corps and Soranik think that Sinestro's gone mad, he orders Arkillo to raise the troops and defend Nok.  Yeah Arkillo's nursing a stump for the moment, but after Sinestro gives him finger constructs along with a ring construct to go with it, He gets on board and the Sinestro Corps heads to Nok.

On Nok, our heroes...... and I guess the Indigo Tribe (They aren't my heroes) have done their best to hold off Bekka and her forces but they're just too much, that is until Sinestro and his Corps shows up and it seems for a brief moment that they just might turn the tides of this battle.  I'm serious, I was wondering for the majority of this battle if there was something special about the power of fear against the New Gods, but after a page or two I realized that they just had the element of surprise on their side and they almost immediately begin to get slaughtered.

In the end we find out that Sinestro's main play for helping the Indigo Tribe out is that he doesn't want to lose the ability to teleport when this war goes full bore.  So yes he'll help the Indigos out now, so he can use them later.  This rescue mission was also for Sinestro to trim the fat of his Corps so whoever was unworthy of wearing the yellow ring would simply get slaughtered............ and if that wasn't enough to cut players from the team, he also made it so their rings would self destruct, as to cover their escape from Bekka.  So good strategy or dick move?  You decide.  So Sinestro, the Indigo Tribe and John Stewart and his Lanterns are safe and we leave Bekka looking furious at Sinestro's methods of leadership.  It looks like he's going to have a New God gunning for him for now on and that's not something you really want in life.

That's it for this month's Sinestro and man am I shocked that I just witnessed the Sinestro Corps rescuing Green Lanterns and the Indigo Tribe.  While the GODHEAD story still suffers from New Gods whooping on Lanterns, this part was really cool seeing Sinestro being the strategist we know him to be.  Yeah we haven't really gotten anywhere yet with the story but these individual Lantern issues have all had something to make them fun nonetheless.  See you next week as we get back to Green Lantern and see how Hal is coping with the tremendous loss he experienced at the beginning of this month.  See you then.

Bits and Pieces:

The artwork in Sinestro is tremendous and constantly exceeds my expectations every month.  The art team of Eaglesham, Coccolo, Hanna and Wright are just masters here and I wouldn't be surprised if they went around gloating about their badassery.  Bunn's story was good as well, but I'm starting to get burned out on the "fight of the week" style that GODHEAD seems to be doing during this first act.  I just hope that Act 2 begins telling a larger story and doesn't rely on the "fight of the week" scenario.  This was still an enjoyable issue and even though I complained about it, the fight was pretty cool.  Go check it out and get your fear on.

8.5/10
