Controlling One's Fate

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Even though it hasn't happened in a long time........ It looks like this story continues where the last issue of Earth 2 left off with Doctor Fate realizing that Nabu is a dick and going back to help fight off the growing menace of Apokolips with his fellow heroes.  This is the last issue of Earth 2 and I don't know how I feel about that.  It's this title that finally got me to get off my high horse and check out the New 52...... which led to this site and now it's all over.  After our brief speed bump in our stories called Convergence, we'll at least have Earth 2: Society and if it's like what I hope, then it's what I wanted the Earth 2 title to be all along....... So I guess I can get over this title ending.  Let's check out this final issue and see if it's memorable.

Explain It!:

While I'm happy that this issue actually comes off as...... an actual issue instead of just being a story that World's End needed to be told..... I find the timeline a little odd.  Some of the things going on here seem to be what's going on in this week's Earth 2: World's End, while others come off like this is happening before....... It's not a big deal, just something that I found odd.  This issue is all about getting all our Wonders of Earth 2 together so that Commander Sato can rally the troops in what could be the final defense against Apokolips.  Then the heroes just fight one of the satellites that are drilling into the planet....... Yeah, it's kind of a let down but this issue does happen to tell us what happened to Captain Steel way back when he entered the fire pit and came across the Avatar of the Red.......... He was attacked.  That's not the point though, since issue #13 where this went down and Captain Steel came out of the fire pit screaming about a Red Lantern, it's gotten people to shout in excitement about the inclusion of the Red Lanterns in this series.  While it might be obvious to most by now, this is just what he called the Avatar of the Red when he came across her, but the point I'm trying to make is that I enjoyed this part of the story as a way to tie things up and end people's confusion.

So the Wonders band together and go and fight this satellite and this completely becomes a Doctor Fate and Hawkgirl story.  It's around this point that I realize that the series is simply trying to tie loose ends up because we have a flashback to the day that Khalid put on the Helm of Fate and Kendra got her wings........... the wings were granted as a gift and Doctor Fate saved them both....... That's it and it didn't really feel like it was needed except that it was a way for Kendra to tell Khalid to sack up, put on the helmet and destroy the satellite.

In the end, our heroes save the day......... by destroying one satellite and Khalid, now that he's put the helmet back on feels the nagging control of Nabu, who tells him a enigmatic rhyme about a hero dying at the end of the World's End series.

That's it for this series of Earth 2 and while I know that Society will be coming out in June, I kind of want more of this series just so that it could be redeemed in the future.  This was an awesome series and somewhere last year it just lost it's way and became a mediocre companion piece to World's End.  The art here was fantastic though, every character looked great, it just wasn't a strong ending story........ Yeah, the story will continue in World's End, but I just think that this title deserved a better note to end on than just a story where Khalid gets his groove back.  Man, Society better be good.

Bits and Pieces:

While the art in this issue is great, it doesn't have an equally great story for this series to end on.  Yeah, it's just becoming Earth 2: Society but this title was really important to me and just having a throwaway story with a loose end tied up just left me wanting more.

6.5/10
