Embracing The Woman in Wonder Woman

*Non Spoilers and Score At The Bottom*

Well, Donna Troy is taken care of and it's time to move on and start fresh........ and what better way than with a new outfit?  That's right all you wonderful Wonder Woman fans, Diana is getting a new look and hopefully she gets to enjoy it before another big bad comes careening towards her........ Yeah, it's doubtful, but one can always hope right?  Let's dive into this issue of Wonder Woman and see what's going down with the God of War herself.  Let's check it out.

Explain It!:

Our story begins with Diana going to check in on Donna Troy and see how she's adjusting to caged life.  Yeah, Donna knows that she was wrong for all the things that she did, but getting a pep talk from Wonder Woman isn't really the best thing that Donna could hope for at this time.  I mean, I understand that Diana wants to try and reform her doppelganger and I want that too, but damn; maybe give it a little time....... Once visitation hours were over, Diana then goes and visits another blast from the past, Zola and Zeke.  I really like how we're kept in the loop about those characters because even though it seems like fans of Wonder Woman are torn between loving or hating Brian Azzarello's run on the book, I was a fan and enjoy seeing Zola and Zeke still around.  After the little get together, it seems like Wonder Woman is just getting her affairs in order as she tries to re-invent herself.  Yes, she's Wonder Woman, but when she started her career in protecting the world, she was little more than a girl in her mind and now it's time to grab a hold of the woman concept in her name and mature a bit as a hero and as the God of War.  This of course calls for a new outfit that she had Hephaestus create for her.............. and at this moment I'm not really sure if I like it or dislike it.  I loved the slight tweak that the New 52 gave to her classic costume, but there are aspects of this costume that I like as well.  I guess I'll just have to wait and see what the further adventures of Wonder Woman do to make me enjoy it more or dislike it completely.

Our issue goes into Wonder Woman doing some everyday super heroics by appearing on a bridge because someone has threatened to detonate a bomb if they don't get to meet Wonder Woman and even though the police think it's just someone trying to get famous on Youtube, our hero goes in, but what she finds is weird.  The person on the bridge isn't some obsessed fan boy, he actually lured Wonder Woman there to simply see who she was and how she acted.  After a brief tussle, the man falls off the bridge and disappears and our God of War is left baffled as to who this mysterious person was and how they knew that she was in fact the God of War.

In the end, that mysterious fellow goes back to his..........basement apartment/portal, where the portal asked what the man thought of the god and when the guy says that he'd be much better suited as the God of War because he'd use his power, unlike Wonder Woman, the portal springs forth a Pegasus and a golden bow and arrows to help this mysterious villain lay claim to the power.  Is this some sort of wishing well and if it is, how the hell do I get my hands on one?  Yeah, it would probably just sit there and make terrible small talk like Jim, so never mind.

That's it for this issue of Wonder Woman and while I've heard that a lot of people haven't been digging this creative team's run, I have to say that I really enjoyed this issue.  Yeah, the first half was simply getting us caught up on characters who previous appeared in this comic, but it really served well to get everyone on board in case this is their first Wonder Woman book and decided to get on board after the Convergence break.  It's funny to me because the big draw to this book is obviously the fact that Wonder Woman got a costume change, but in the end it really didn't matter much and really wasn't played up as much as I thought it would be; like in Superman and Batman.  She got changed and went about her super day like nothing happened.  While we really didn't get any information about who this new villain is, we got enough to keep us interested with his magic wishing well and his abhorrence of Wonder Woman, so it works for me.  As always in this book, the art was great and is one of the best illustrated books that DC has to offer.

Bits and Pieces:

On top of being one of the finest looking comics in the DC Comics roster, this story begins fresh by welcoming new readers in by playing a little catch up, but not the awful forced kind, instead Meredith Finch offers us a sentimental visit between Wonder Woman and past characters, while giving us a whole new interesting story to look forward to and that's not even mentioning the new garb Diana's sporting.  Definitely a fun time to be a Wonder Woman fan and I can't wait to check out more.

8/10
