Same Old Song and Dance

I wish I could say that I love this book, but if truth be told, I barely like it.  The whole first arc devolved into an Assassin of the Month hunt and by the time we got halfway through, I had already lost interest.  I must not have been the only one because when June arrived, we were given a soft reboot of this book with Lobo back alone and ready for action.  Unfortunately, we still seem to be getting another (insert bad guy) of the month club...it doesn't matter who or what Lobo works for, we keep getting more of the same.  Does this issue change things up and make this book a little bit better or will it continue scraping the bottom of the barrel?  Let's find out...

The issue opens with Lobo clocking in for his new job as Whip for the Void Whisper and while it may sound cool that he is fighting a Thanagarian, a Martian and a Daemonite all at the same time, it fell a little flat.  I don't know why, but it really felt like Lobo is fighting without consequences and no matter what happens, it never feels like he is any real danger.  If that wasn't bad enough, he is aided by a mysterious ally who Lobo may not like, but is sure he will see again.  This part was so out of left field and was just so heavy handed.

The reason the three bad guys are fighting Lobo is some embedded spider-bot that looked disgusting and is controlling them.  Again, it's a been there done that type of story because i have seen this story a million times already.

After a trip to the scapyard for some upgrades and tracking from the Mechanic, Lobo heads off to the source of these spider-bots...Saidris and the Countess Odessa.  The not so subtle Lobo rips off an alien's head and hits another guy with it instead of dealing with the situation like a subtle badass. .  It's a cool move, but a little too late to get me pumped.  He finally gets an audience with the Countess and when shit goes south and Lobo needs to fight back, he can't.  Looks like some emo looking galactic assassin has himself a spider bot problem.

How can an issue filled with battle scenes be so boring?  I never once cared about anyone in this issue and that includes Lobo.  I know some people who comment on our site love Lobo and those guys deserve a whole lot better.

Cliff Richards art is again the highlight of the issue and it's not just that the bar is set so low.  His character models were really good and the whole issue looked really good.

Bits and Pieces:

This is another bomb of an issue that left me bored by the end.  The most honest thing I can say about Lobo is that if I wasn't reviewing it, I would not buy another issue.  It is that bad.

4.0/10
